Now where were we? Oh, yes, Very Exclusive Cooking Club, trying to delete some photos before my disk is totally full. I'm not sure why I had the December tea I posted last week in this file. It didn't count as my turn, because here I am doing the January 2017 lunch.

There's a story behind the pie. While President Truman was on the USS Missouri, the chef served this buttermilk pie. Harry loved it so much, he asked for the recipe, and the chef wouldn't give it to him. After the chef retired, someone was able to obtain the recipe and it appeared in a magazine, where I found it, along with the story. I have seen many versions of the same recipe since then in those fund raiser cookbooks.

Now for more food. My Brother Bill, Nephew Will, and Niece Christy came for lunch on the 2nd to celebrate the July 4th holiday (Christy's day off.)
The flag salad plates, red glass chargers, napkin rings, and 4th centerpiece and scatters are gone.
We had bbq ribs, baked beans, corn casserole, potato salad, cole slaw, fruit salad, cucumbers and onions, deviled eggs, cheese bread, cherry and blueberry mini-cheesecakes.
On July 4, I met Fannie Mae and Mim at Sam's for our traditional 4th of July hot dog. The BEST hot dogs and only $1.38 for a hot dog and a soft drink. We were discussing whether we'd watch A Capitol Fourth, and how by the time they get to the 1812 Overture, the smoke sometimes hides the fireworks. Then we started discussing the 1812 Overture and wondering why we always hear it when it has nothing to do with the USA. I couldn't remember why it pertained to Russia, but I thought it had to do with Napoleon. Couldn't remember the details. So for inquiring minds, here you go:
The 1812 Overture, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, tells the story of Russia's defense against Napoleon's invasion in 1812. The piece commemorates the Russian victory, particularly the Battle of Borodino, and incorporates musical themes representing both the Russian and French sides of the conflict.
Napoleon's Grande Armée invaded Russia in 1812, aiming to force Tsar Alexander I into an alliance. The campaign was a disaster for the French, marked by harsh winter conditions and fierce Russian resistance.
So now we know.
I saw a cute couple at Sam's Club dressed from head to toe for the 4th. I asked them if I could take their picture, and they were delighted to pose for me. You'll like this.
Her purse.
Their shoes
Her nails, her rings, and that cute bracelet. You can't tell, but her necklace and earrings were also patriotic.
Even her sunglasses.
What a treat just looking at them.
Mim went to Brooklyn for a long weekend. She took this photo from the Brooklyn Bridge, and I love it. Doesn't it just shout New York?! The Statue of Liberty in the background and the loading cranes across the way are positioned perfectly. I love the colors, and I love that you can see their wakes as the ferries make their ways across the water.
I like this version better, before I enlarged it.
That's all I have this week. We'll finish up VECC next week.
