Happy New Half Year

What a great day to make a fresh start! A new half year, the 1st of the month, and it's on Monday. Everything is perfectly aligned for reviewing my 2024 goals, promising myself to diet and budget this half of the year. As you've already guessed, I didn't do so well the first half.

I'm always puzzled when seniors say they're bored. How can that be? I, along with everyone I know, complain of wanting more time. I had a busy but satisfying week.

Monday - I took Joey to the doctor (not yet released to drive after surgery), then she treated me to lunch at Springfield Family Restaurant. I'd been wanting their chicken strips, but what a disappointment! Overcooked and no seasoning. I did, however, on Joey's recommendation order the fried okra, and it was top notch.

Tuesday - I took care of some of those things nagging at me and searched and searched until I found the cutting strip mats for my paper cutter. Then I scheduled my air conditioner maintenance, a termite inspection, and someone to come remove the huge wasp nest up in the peak of my garage roof which I could never reach. Then I called my lawn people who have some magic weed spray that kills weeds for months. They sprayed behind my fence months ago, and it's still clear. I decided to surrender, and just let them spray my flower beds to get rid of that Johnson grass and start over. They have a new assistant and I wasn't sure whether I got my message across.

Wednesday - I picked up Brother Bill in Republic and we met Brother Jim and Sister(in-law) Becky at El Maya in Mt. Vernon. We arrived early, so we drove a little and explored. I also dropped into the post office for stamps, and was told that first class postage in going to 73 cents July 14. I predict another drop in the number of Christmas cards we'll receive this year.

El Maya is right on the square with a courthouse in the middle.

There are murals on some walls, and the fire hydrants are painted red, white, and blue with eagles.

I took lots of photos at El Maya last year. So colorful! If you missed it, click HERE.

I had my same carnitas plate.

Becky had a seafood quesadilla which was loaded with shrimp, scallops, and other goodies, but you can't see them from this angle.

Bill had a trio of street tacos.

And Jim had some sort of burrito which looked more like a fancy enchilada.

Everyone was pleased and I ate mine for lunch, dinner, and lunch the next day.

Thursday - Billy, the termite inspector, came first. He declared me termite free and also checked for standing water under the house. What a sweet and friendly guy.  I highly recommend Campbell Pest Control. Their inspections are free, so why not give them a call? Their website is HERE.

In the afternoon, the a/c people called and said they were free, so could they come now instead of Friday. Heck, yes! Git 'er done. I forgot that Roller Mechanical in Sparta charges $110 per hour no matter what the job. I needed a something - capacitor? - so my bill for a maintenance call was $145. I won't make that mistake again, but this company does all kinds of work and they usually can send someone when everyone else is scheduling ahead.

The wasp killers will be here on July 16, and the weed killers are scheduled for July 2.

Friday I did a little long overdue housekeeping (didn't finish).

Saturday was a very enjoyable day. Elly and I decided to choose a street and go up one side and down the other, eating at each restaurant except chain fast food. We decided on Battlefield as Elly has been wanting to try Bambinos at the corner of Battlefield and Lone Pine.  We had fettucine Alfredo with shrimp, broccoli, and mushrooms and some good bread which would have been superb had it been warmed. We both would have preferred chicken in this dish.

The decor is plain, but okay; service very attentive; food presentation less than attractive; and the noisy level hampered conversation. Of course, I forgot photos.

We're going east on Battlefield, then head back west on the opposide of the street until we get to Relics. I don't know if they still serve food, but we won't even check because the last time was so disappointing.

All restaurants will be reported on my blog, and I'll try to remember photos. Maybe we'll discover a new place you'd like to try as well. Or maybe you'd like to join us. If so, let me know, and I'll give you a heads up on when and where each time.

We ran into this in a parking lot as we were exploring, and I have never seen anything like it. Any ideas? My first thought was to reverse because I thought a SWAT team might be flushing someone out.

I think the white stip at the top might be the headlights.

The bottom looks as if it might have two release handles to pull the bumper forward, but why would you?

I don't know where you add gas or hook up a charger, and the windows were darkly tinted, but Elly could see the steering wheel and said that it's square.

Next stop was Neat Repeats by Food 4 Less where I found a glass bead necklace with a Land's End tag. I didn't know they sold jewelry. I thought $8 was high, but I wanted it, and after checking online prices, I decided I got a bargain.

And I paid $4 for six butterflies that will soon be flying over my bedroom dresser.

I was feeling very appreciated as I received three pretty thank you notes and a letter from President Trump (form letter), all in one day.

We finished off the day with a trip through Andy's Frozen Custard where I got a pineapple concrete with enough sugar and calories to put an end to my day, so I spent the evening on the couch, binge watching Bull.

Sunday I spent time with the kitties, who were feeling neglected because I was gone a lot this week. I geared up for a new half year, finished off the Bull series, and vowed to do more reading and watching videos so I can discard some of my stash. Aren't we blessed with so much entertainment available? I have so many wonderful books (I always think of Abe when I start a new book), CD's and YouTube (and yes, some old vinyl) for wonderful music, TV and DVD's (and yes, some old VHS tapes) for viewing, and lots of craft items for hobbies. And a new show at Sight and Sound next year - it's David.

And time to celebrate the 4th. I'm ready.

Pillow tops from Temu.

A wreath I threw together with flowers I found on sale at Walmart after last year's 4th; a wreath from an after-Christmas sale, and the rest from Dollar Tree.

Until next time -
